Saint Anthony of Padua
Evangelical Doctor, Wonder-Worker, and Finder of Lost Things
Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) was an Augustinian canon turned Franciscan friar, priest, and Doctor of the Church known as the "Evangelical Doctor" and one of the most beloved thaumaturgists (wonder-workers) in Catholic history. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Anthony joined the Franciscans inspired by the martyrdom of five Franciscan friars in Morocco. Endowed with extraordinary eloquent preaching, vast knowledge of Sacred Scripture, and miraculous gifts, Anthony preached across Italy and France, converting heretics, defending the poor, and reconciling enemies. Tradition records that fish rose from the sea to hear his sermon when heretics at Rimini refused to listen. He died in Padua at age 36 and was canonized within a year of his death, leaving a legacy of intercession as the Patron of Lost Items and Miraculous Favors.
