I. Overview & The Little Flower

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, known as "The Little Flower" (La Petite Fleur) and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, is one of the most widely venerated saints of modern times. Entering the Discalced Carmelite monastery at Lisieux at the age of fifteen, she lived a hidden life of quiet holiness, developing her celebrated "Little Way" (la petite voie) of spiritual childhood—an accessible path to sanctity based on childlike trust, humble love, and offering the smallest daily sacrifices to God.

II. Early Life & Pious Family

Thérèse Martin was born on January 2, 1873, in Alençon, France, the youngest of nine children born to Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin, both of whom were canonized as a married couple by Pope Francis in 2015. Following her mother's death from breast cancer when Thérèse was four, the family relocated to Les Buissonnets in Lisieux.

Thérèse was a sensitive child who suffered severe emotional trauma after her mother's death and the subsequent entry of her elder sisters Pauline and Marie into the Carmelite convent. On May 13, 1883, ten-year-old Thérèse was miraculously healed of a grave nervous illness when the statue of the Blessed Virgin in her bedroom smiled upon her ("The Grace of the Smile").

III. Christmas Conversion & Papal Audience

On Christmas Eve 1886, at age thirteen, Thérèse experienced her "complete conversion," receiving the grace of spiritual maturity that freed her from emotional oversensitivity and filled her heart with an urgent zeal to convert sinners and comfort the Heart of Jesus.

Determined to enter Carmel immediately, she faced opposition from convent superiors and local clergy due to her young age. During a diocesan pilgrimage to Rome in November 1887, during a private audience with the venerable Pope Leo XIII, the fourteen-year-old Thérèse broke protocol to kneel and ask the Pontiff directly for permission to enter Carmel.
