Biography & Hagiography

Saint Michael the Archangel is the Chief Prince of the Heavenly Host and defender of God’s people. His sacred name in Hebrew signifies "Who is like unto God?"—the battle cry with which he led the faithful angels in casting Satan and the rebellious spirits out of Heaven. In Sacred Scripture (Daniel, Revelation, Epistle of Jude), Saint Michael appears as the protector of Israel, the defender of the Church against the dragon, the presenter of souls before the divine judgment seat, and the champion in spiritual warfare. Traditional Catholic devotion honors Saint Michael through the Prayer of Pope Leo XIII, invoking his potent celestial intercession against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
