Biography & Hagiography

Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish Basque knight, mystic, and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Wounded by a cannonball in his leg at the Siege of Pamplona in 1521, Ignatius read the Life of Christ and Lives of the Saints during his convalescence, undergoing a profound spiritual awakening. Laying down his sword before Our Lady of Montserrat and spending a year of solitary penance in a cave at Manresa, Ignatius composed the Spiritual Exercises—a transformative manual of spiritual discernment and meditation. He later studied theology at the University of Paris, gathering six companions including Saint Francis Xavier. In 1540, Pope Paul III approved the Society of Jesus under Ignatius's leadership, which spearheaded Catholic educational, theological, and missionary renewal throughout the Counter-Reformation under the motto: "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("For the Greater Glory of God").
